LinuxICE 2.0, codenamed "Anino", is released. LinuxICE is a complete operating system designed from the ground up for car entertainment/infotainment systems. LinuxICE 2.0 features built in navigation, media playback, with support for many add on devices including OBDII scantools, HDRadio, and various touchscreens. LinuxICE is designed to be fast, efficient, easy to setup/operate, and stable.

"Anino" is a word in common Filipino tongues for "shadow". Up until this release, LinuxICE has been just a shadow. LinuxICE 1 never got out of beta. 2.0 marks the first final and stable release of the OpenICE stack. Due to the efforts of dozens of individuals, LinuxICE is no longer a shadow, and is now a fully complete system.

What's new?

  • Completely new base: ubuntu 9.04
  • New packages: wifiproximity, smsd, obdgpslogger, ice-rules, linuxice, linuxice-standard, linuxice-desktop, fbd, navit-ice, navit, ubiquity-ice
  • Special Package versions (modified from orignal source to work better in LinuxICE): gpsd, hibernate, trayer
  • Improvements in: iceinstall, iceupdate, icetouch, icesettings
  • Supported devices: ELM based scantools, Visteon HD-Radio
  • Partial support for: FusionBrain
  • Updated nGhost (2.5) and icepanel packages.
    • featuring nWeather, nCarInfo, nVoiceSynth
  • DVD version including maps for the entire world
  • Improved boot speed
  • One click system updating (via iceupdate).
  • Improved build system


Now, for some statistics:

  • The LinuxICE1 torrent has been downloaded 1383 times in its development lifecycle (Alpha1 - Beta2)
  • The LinuxICE2 development torrents was downloaded 798 times.
  • Much more than 303 gigabytes of data were pushed between the seeders during development releases.
  • nGhost has more than 39,000 lines of code and is worth over $1.1million dollars if developed by a private company (generated using David A. Wheeler's 'SLOCCount').
  • 17 people have contributed code to OpenICE projects since its conception.
  • Over 300 people have posted on forums or the irc channel contributing to the development of LinuxICE.
  • Numerous users have contributed patches to nGhost using the forums
  • The LinuxICE repository has 23 custom packages on top of the thousands in the ubuntu repository.
  • LinuxICE can boot in under 23 seconds from power on on some hardware.
